In India, Independence day falls on the Fifteenth Of August every year and is marked as a national holiday. We commemorate our independence from The United Kingdom on 15th August 1947, when we broke all the chains of inequality and slavery from colonial rule. 

The United Kingdom transferred all the governing powers to the Indian Constituent Assembly, came into force. We took over the control of our nation after a long battle of the independence movement which followed the path of non-violence and civil disobedience.

How Do Indians Celebrate Independence Day?

Independence Day is one of the national festivals of India and on the eve of Independence day, The President Of India Address To The Nation. On the day of Independence, The Defacto ( Prime Minister) hoists the Indian tricolor on the palisade of the historical monument Red Fort in New Delhi. 

After the Gun salutes, the Prime Minister highlights the past achievements, calls for future developments in his speech. He also pays homage to the national leaders who sacrificed their lives for the liberty of individuals. After our beautiful national anthem is sung followed by the march past. India’s diverse and beautiful traditions, scenes of national struggle are showcased followed by parades with people wearing beautiful apparel. 

How Schools Celebrate Independence Day?

Schools and colleges also conduct flag hoisting ceremonies along with cultural events on patriotic songs. Premises are decorated with paper, balloons and adorned with led lights. In some states, kite flying adds colors to the occasion. Citizens in India and residing all over the world decorate their cars, houses, shops, etc with replicas of tricolor. 

In some other nations, like the USA and other countries, with Indian immigrants, Independence day is also marked as India Day and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. The students also have a solo as well as a duet performance on the patriotic songs and fill the atmosphere with patriotism and compassion for the country.

This year 76th Independence Day 2022 will be celebrated with a fresh and pious theme, Nation First, Always First will be celebrated where PM Modi will address the nation from The Red Fort.

This year also due to pandemics, the cultural events will be restricted for the public. Only the NCC cadets will attend the function.

Significance Of Independence Day

The reason behind celebrating Independence day is we remind the sacrifices of our frontline leaders and freedom fighters to get independence from colonial rule. We observed this day by hoisting our tricolor, with cultural events, 21 gunshots, parades, and pageants.

Amazing Facts related to Independence Day 

  • The Indian tricolor flag with three stripes of red, yellow, and green was hoisted for the very first time on 7 August 1906 in Kolkata. The present Indian Flag was designed by one of the freedom fighters Pingali Venkayya in 1921.
  • The current tricolor with three stripes of saffron, white and green with the Ashoka Chakra in the middle was officially adopted on 22 July 1947.
  • Five other nations also shared their independence day with us; they are Bahrain, North Korea, South Korea, the Republic of Congo, and Liechtenstein.
  • The song Bharta Bhagya Vidhata was composed in 1911 by Nobel Prize Winner Rabindranath Tagore, this song was later renamed, Jana Gana Mana. and it was officially adopted by the constituent assembly on January 24th, 1950. 
  • Goa was the last territory to join the Indian states. Yes! It is true. Even after the independence day, Goa was still a Portuguese colony and it was handed over to the Indian army in 1961.
