Festivities of Chhath Puja 2021

In India, the Hindu holiday of Chhath Puja is observed. In India, Chhath Puja is a four-day traditional festival. Beginning with Kartik Shukla Chaturthi and finishing with Kartik Shukla Saptami, the festival lasts four days.

  1. First Day: Nahaye Khaye (November 8th, 2021)

Date: Karthik Shukla Chaturthi

Nahay-Khay is the name given to the first day of the Chhath festival. Firstly, the residence is cleansed and consecrated on this day. After that, the Vratis bath in pure water at their nearby river or pond. Vratis only eats once on this particular day. During this fast, fried foods are strictly prohibited. Bronze or clay implements are used to cook this delicacy.

  1. Second Day: Lohanda or Kharna (November 9th, 2021)

Date: Karthik Shukla Panchami

The Kharna or Lohanda day is the second day of the Chhath celebration. Vratis fasts for the entire day, refusing to drink even a bit of water before dusk. Rice pudding is made with jaggery and sugarcane juice in the evening.

Kheer-roti is served as prasad to all family members, friends, and relatives. The entire procedure is known as kharna. After that, the Vratis do a 36-hour Nirjala fast. Vrati prepares Thekua dish as a sacred offering for fasting worship in the midst of the night.

  1. Third Day: Sandhya Arghya (November 10th, 2021)

Date: Karthik Shukla Shashthi

The Sandhya Arghya is the third day of the Chhath celebration. All members of the family get ready for worship during the day. For Chhath Puja, unique offerings like Thekua and Rice laddus are prepared. For Chhath Puja, the pujari places the fruits of the ceremonies in a bamboo basket called Daura, which is then laid in Devakari.

After performing pooja there, devotees take the coconut in a soop, five kinds of fruits, and other things of worship in Daura, and the men of the house take the Daura with their hands to Chhath Ghat in the evening. Purity is prioritised throughout this celebration. Throughout the festival, women frequently visit the ghat to perform Chhath Maiya songs.

A chaura of Chhath Mata is built on the riverbanks, and coconut is placed on top of it, together with all the articles of worship, and the lamps are ignited. Vratis stands in water up to his knees shortly before dusk, taking the entire worship materials, and presents arghya to the drowning Surya Bhagwan. Shashthi Devi hymns are chanted at night after the Sun God is worshipped, and the Vrat Katha is recited.

  1. Fourth Day: Arghya Usha (November 11th, 2021)

Date: Karthik Shukla

On the fourth day, the last day, Saptami Arghya is presented to the rising Surya. The Vrati-Jana arrives at the ghat with all of his family members before daybreak to honour Surya Bhagwan.

The food served at Sandhya Arghya have been replaced with new ones, but the fruits have not changed. The regulations and restrictions are followed exactly as they are for the nighttime arghya. Puja Archana is the ghat’s post-completion ceremony of worship.

Following that, serenity is sought through the seeking of protection of the child from Chhathi Maiya and the contentment of the whole family. Worshippers consume sharbat and raw milk the following prayer and consume a small amount of prasad to break their fasting, which is known as Paran or Parana.

Legend of Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja has a legend associated with it. On the Chhath celebration, which is also referenced in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, the Chhathi Maiya is worshipped. According to tradition, Manu Swayambhu’s son, King Priyavrat, had no children. He used to feel depressed as a result of all this. Maharishi Kashyap requested that he perform a yajna. He did a yajna for a child as per Maharishi’s directions. Following this, Queen Malini gave birth to a male child, but he died shortly after birth. After this, King and his family were devastated. Only then did a vessel appear in the sky, which was occupied by Mata Shashthi.

When the king bowed to her, she revealed herself, saying, “I am Lord Brahma’s Manas daughter, Shashthi Devi.” I guard all of the world’s kids and bestow the joys of childhood to all childless couples.

Goddess then touched the motionless kid with her palms, bringing him back to life. The king was overjoyed by the goddess’s grace and revered her as Shashthi Devi. This festival is said to be conducted all over the world after this ceremony.

Chhath Puja’s Cultural and Religious Importance

Chhath Puja is a spiritually and culturally significant festival. It’s the only event where the Sun God is honoured and an arghya is presented. The Hindu religion places a high value on the worshipping of the sun. The Sun God is referred to in the Vedas as the world’s soul. The sun’s light has the capacity to kill a range of illnesses.

The person gains health, prosperity, and consciousness as a result of the sun’s fortunate effect. The sun is supposed to be an element of the soul, parent, ancestor, and esteem in Vedic astrology. On the Chhath Puja, a person, children, joy, and yearning are accomplished via devotion to the Sun god and Shashti Maiya. The festival’s key cultural aspect is the modesty of tradition, as well as a passion for purity and the environment.

Chhath Puja Song

The ladies sing many Chhath Puja Songs during the festivities. Some of them are

Maar Bore Sugwa Dhanush, Kelwa Ke Paat Per Uge Lan Suraj Dev, He Chhathi Maiya, Kaanch Hi Baans Ke Bahangiya, and Uthau Suraj Bhail Bihan.
