A child’s first superhero is always their father. Be it daddy’s little princess or daddy’s little guy; a father is someone who can not be replaced. For many, their father may not be their biological father. However, to be a father is so much more than simply contributing to the birth of a child. Being a good father means being there for your child at all times, supporting them, and loving them. A good father never gives up on his child and is always there to uplift them and be a support system. To honor the sacrifice done by dads around the world, Fathers day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year.
Fathers Day History:
In the year 1905, there was a terrible mining accident in Fairmont, West Virginia, which led to the death of about 360 men. Grace Golden Clayton, the daughter of a dedicated reverend, made the initiation to have a Sunday service to honor all the fathers who lost their lives in this awful accident leaving more than 1000 children fatherless. However, this did not become a recurring tradition and was soon forgotten. While several other people had the same idea, Mrs.Sonora Smart Dodd is accredited for spreading the word about it, and it was soon declared a national holiday in the United States.
Since the United Nations does not recognize this day, there are no particular themes for it. On this day, people honor and thank their fathers for the sacrifices they make for the sake of the child.
Struggles Faced by a Single Father:
The biggest struggle faced by all the single dads is finding the right balance between work and home. Being the only caregiver for the child, the father can neither neglect work nor neglect the child. Like every other parent, single dads also want their kids to be disciplined and on the right side.
However, as the juggle between work and home, it often tends to be really difficult to oversee the child’s every move. There are two situations to consider here; 1) The child is mature and understanding of their dad’s position and ensures being a good son/ daughter. 2) The child does not realize the effort the father puts into keeping the family going and acts immaturely by taking advantage of this situation and doing wrong things.
Between household work and office work, it is difficult for the dad to get some “me time” or alone time, where he can just wind down and relax for the day. This is an accurate representation of being a parent in general. It is even more challenging as a single parent.
Tips for Single Dads:
The first and foremost thing is to give yourself a pat on your back! You are doing a fantastic job, and things may seem hard right now, but it will all be worth it, in the end, to see your children grow up into beautiful individuals who love their father. If your employer is an understanding person, then try talking with them and coming up with a schedule that will allow you to get some breathing time. If you are in touch with the mother of your child, then remember not to criticize them; dropping your kid at your ex- partner’s house is hard, but you also need to understand that your child would need a mother figure if she is actively present in your lives. Lastly, take it easy on yourself and enjoy the process.
A Note for Father’s Day 2021:
The past two years have been a difficult one. The pandemic has affected everybody’s life in one way or the other. To all the children who have lost their parents during this pandemic need to remember that no matter what, their parents are always looking after them, even if they are not with you! And to all the children who had abusive households, you have proved that you are strong, and you need to go on and be stronger and learn from the mistakes your parents made, and you need to vow to be a better one in your future! To all the dads who have lost their children, you should be proud of yourself for raising your child, and you need to know that they love you no matter what.
Some dads have lost their jobs and are struggling right now; times are difficult, but you are strong, and your family is proud of all the struggle you go through for them, and they love you! Keep calm, and things will surely find their place.
How to Celebrate Fathers Day?
It is your time to show your father that you love and honor them for even the tiniest things they have contributed to your life. There is absolutely no need to do something grand; you can simply make a handmade card to show your appreciation. Bake a cookie or cake and give it to your dad. Most importantly, spend your time with him and maybe take out for a nice dinner or cook a meal and eat it with him. Watch a movie together or just do the activity that you both enjoy doing together. The world is your oyster; you can do anything which would make dad happy and show that you care for him.
A father is someone significant in your life, and we need to be thankful to them for everything they did for us since birth. A father always prioritizes their child and puts their needs before themselves, and never takes a break. Nothing in the world would be good enough to thank them. Happy Fathers Day to all the great fathers out there! You are appreciated.
