The only kind of people we place in the same level of god are doctors; they are the ones who have the power to heal and save lives. They play a crucial role in society; that no other profession or machine can not replace. To honor their works and sacrifices, we celebrate national doctors day on the 1st of July.
Humans always have trust issues. Even if we buy a small appliance, we check it so many times before buying it. However, it is truly astonishing to see how we easily trust another person with our life. This trust we put in doctors shows their importance in our lives.
The History Behind National Doctors Day:
It is celebrated on the 1st of July in honor of Bengal’s former chief minister, Bharat Ratna awardee, and the most famous Congress leader Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. He is one of the great leaders behind the construction of critical medical facilities such as “Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Victoria Institution (college), Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital and the Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children.”
In 1962, he passed away at the age of 80. He was awarded the highest civilian award a year before his death. On national doctors day, we not only show our gratitude for his contributions, but we also show our appreciation towards the doctors and other frontline medical workers for their contributions as well.
Why Should We Celebrate National Doctors Day?
The life of a doctor is so hectic, and every day, they are giving up their sleep and time with their family to save somebody else. There is no holiday from being a doctor; they need to work regardless of what day it is or what time it is.
It is crucial for us as laypeople to recognize the time and effort they put into this selfless act. They deserve to be celebrated every day! On National Doctors Day, we can show them that we respect them and are grateful for them.
National Doctors Day in 2022:
The theme for this year has not been announced. However, it is sure that it would be related to the ongoing pandemic situation. The theme for 2020 was “lessen the mortality of COVID-19”.
The most hardworking industry right now is the medical field, so many doctors and frontline workers are sparing their lives in order to save others. With ruthless working hours, doctors are spending every minute to cater to COVID affected patients. According to the Hindustan Times, India has lost over 594 doctors in the second wave of COVID infection.
Violence Against Doctors:
Even though doctors are toiling away to save lives, they are being attacked by the citizens.
Why are they getting attacked? You may wonder. Doctors all over India are getting assaulted by family members and goons because the doctors were unable to save a family member. It is truly ridiculous and saddening to witness such barbaric acts. Family members are taking out their anger on the doctors for not being able to save their relatives.
Although there are several allegations against the hospital that they are ignorant towards some patients because they cannot pay the minimum hospital fees, it is still not right to assault a doctor for personal reasons. For example, suppose a person truly lost a family member due to the negligence of a hospital or medical organisation. In that case, they can only take legal action against them and are not allowed to assault them like that.
We have already lost countless lives to this pandemic, and the whole world is facing a sad time, and we really do not need more violence adding on to that.
At the end of the day, doctors continue to do their job even though they are being put in such a vulnerable position. As citizens, we need to think, “what if they stop working and do not want to help anymore?” what would be our situation? Without the help of doctors and scientist, it would have been impossible to recover from the pandemic. We are still fighting and trying to adapt to the “new normal.”
For a moment, we can also ignore the fact of them being doctors who are saving millions of lives during this pandemic. Let us think of it in a humanitarian way. Do you really believe that it is okay to assault another living being like that? Even the profession does not matter; it is a question about humanity.
How to Celebrate National Doctors day 2022?
We can first start by stopping the violence against doctors. We can begin by treating them respectfully and stop the assault against them. As per The Edge Media, “The Indian Medical Association (IMA) addressed a letter to the union home minister Amit Shah demanding to introduce a severe law to protect the well-being of healthcare professionals.”
Hopefully, the letter would be taken into serious consideration and protect the doctors who protect us.
We need to learn to respect doctors every single day and not just on national doctors day 2022. We need to acknowledge and appreciate their efforts and provide them with a safe space so that they can concentrate on their work without the fear of being attacked! We wish a happy national doctors day to all the hardworking doctors! Thank you for your service!
