Who is Indira Gandhi?
Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the first Prime Minister of India who came to power in 1967 and served three consecutive terms until she was assassinated in 1984. Indira Gandhi was married to Feroze Gandhi in 1942, and they had two children, Rajiv and Sanjay Gandhi. However, their marriage was short-lived as she was busy with the events and programs alongside her father. Indira Gandhi was a very significant member of the Congress. She came to power as a member of the Parliament when Congress came to power in 1947. She became a member of the working committee in 1955 and was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1964. The next Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shashtri, made her the Minister of information and broadcasting.
Indira Gandhi faced her first term as the Prime Minister with heavy criticism from the right-wing of the Congress party that former finance minister Morarji Desai led. This eventually led to her being expelled from the Congress Party. Indira then formed a new congress party that won the 1971 elections, and she came back to power.
Her later terms as the Prime Minister saw many setbacks and controversies. The most controversial of this was the emergency declared in India, which was used to imprison her political opponents and the press members who criticized her. Indira Gandhi was very impactful in voicing change for the Dalits and minorities across India, and she was also responsible for the nationalization of many banks in India.
