United Nations Public Service Day 2021

The United Nations public service day 2021 was declared by the united nations general assembly in 2003, aiming to “celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community.” The day is bestowed to the contributions made for enunciating the role, prestige, and visibility of public service and honors civil servants and public helpers all over the world.

United Nations Public Service Day – Aspirations:

There are people that make your life easy. They spend time serving the community through the government based on the people’s interests. While we all walk away from danger, the fire brigade, police officers, and paramedics run towards it to safeguard us. The various sectors cover the overall wellbeing of the residents and the interlinked society as a whole.

Through a global competition for the UN public service awards, is aimed to highlight innovations in the governance of public sectors, reward excellence, efforts, and achievements, motivate public service providers towards innovation and efficiency, enhance professionalism and agility in services, raise the image and hospitality of public service and sourcing to disseminate successful practices for possible replication.

“We are all deeply indebted to you for your remarkable acts of service to humankind,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The world’s development, highly built by such public servants, encourages the youth and attracts them towards careers in the public sector. A UN Public Service Awards (UNPSA) program was set up in 2003 to elucidate and appreciate the services we usually take for granted.

COVID- 19 Pandemic relief:

The pandemic has affected countries worldwide and has caused some irreparable damage to millions of people. Even during such tough times, we discovered our heroes, the frontline workers, putting their lives at stake for easing and assisting the betterment of ours. All the cries of havoc, things we preferred to stay away from, some sacrificed and stepped in for us. Stringent measures have been implemented in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

All public services and personals strive to ensure effective response and mitigate the impact of the epidemic. Not just healthcare workers, but officials and authorities as well, risk everything to respond effectively to the affected public. They deserve the honor, and giving them the spotlight ensures elevated awareness of the general public’s role and responsibility.

The service awards:

The United Nations Public Service Awards is recognized as the most prestigious international recognition in the public service sector. The rewards are aimed to recognize and applaud the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions and inspiring more people to consider or pursue service opportunities. The developments today have led to a more effective and responsive public administration worldwide. By basing annual international competitions, the UN Public Service Awards help induce a sense of integrity, virtuousness, and professionalism in public service.

2030 Agenda:

The 2021 United Nations Public Service aligns with the principles of the Agenda at stratified levels.

  1. Innovation helps in implementation because new approaches and unique mechanisms help improve delivery, inclusivity and strengthen the sector’s services.
  2. Significance of a positive impact in any context of service.
  3. Versatile adaptability is a necessity as it needs to be conclusive of similar efforts and inventions.
  4. Sustainability is the ideal goal in financial, social and environmental terms. Without overcompensation of the desired result or outcome.
  5. Engaging partnerships shouldn’t be limited to the public and the government and should be inclusive of non-state entities and stakeholders.

In conclusion, our ideal lifestyle today is maintained because of our access to the services provided by the public sector and the service providers. As accountable citizens, we need to help out our community as much as possible and help out frontline workers. During the pandemic, we need to stay responsible to control the spread and not agitate more virulence, making it harder for the Public service personnel.
