Diwali begins from Dhanteras and ends with Bhaidooj. The festival not only commemorates Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom Ayodhya after a 14-year exile, but it also has spiritual significance for Sikhs as it was around this time that the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, was freed from imprisonment in 1619. Also called Bandi Chhor Divas, Diwali is one of the most important events in Sikh history. While some people celebrate it, remembering the Pandavas who had returned home after 12 years of exile, because of a humiliating loss to the Kauravas in the game of dice.

It is also believed that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi took birth from the churning of the cosmic ocean, also known as the ‘Samudra Manthan‘. Thus, Goddess Lakshmi is the most significant deity during Diwali puja.

The day of Diwali Puja is decided according to the prevalence of Amavasya tithi at the time of pradosh. According to Drik Panchang, pradosh, which is the time post-sunset, is the most suitable time to perform Diwali puja.
