The festival of Dussehra marks the victory of truth over untruth and victory of good over evil forces. Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami. Dussehra is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm every year on the tenth day of the month of Ashwin. In some states, there is also a tradition of burning Ravana on the day of Vijayadashami. According to the legend, on this day Lord Rama killed the king of Lanka, Ravana. This day is called Vijayadashami because of Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana. According to another legend, Goddess Durga also killed Mahishasura on this day.
