Who is eligible to donate blood?
To donate your blood you must be above the age of 18 and must weigh a minimum of 50 kilograms (the weight depends on the country that you live in). Even though blood donations may be a seemingly simple process, there are many medical requirements one needs to meet before donating blood.
First and foremost, the donated blood can not contain any foreign substances such as drugs or alcohol, which may contaminate the blood. It is also a requirement that the donor must be healthy at the time of donating blood as any virus in blood could be transferred to another person causing several health complications – World Blood Donor Day 2022
Women who are currently breastfeeding or pregnant are advised not to donate blood and if you have recently gotten a tattoo or a body piercing, you must wait for a few months before you can donate blood.
How is donating blood helpful?
Blood donation does not just help save other people but it also helps the donor in several ways. By helping other people, some feel less stressed which helps with their emotional well-being. Donating blood also creates a sense of goodwill in people, which makes them happy and fruitful. You get a free health checkup as before donating blood, you are tested for many diseases, hemoglobin levels, blood pressure, etc. Most importantly, the donated blood can help save somebody’s life.
Side effects of donating blood:
There are no severe side effects from donating blood. Just make sure that you are donating to a trusted health care facility with proper and sanitized equipment. You may feel mild discomfort in the area where the needle was, or your arm might pain slightly. One of the common side effects is feeling dizzy, but this is normal and there is nothing to worry about.
What Precautions to Take Before Donating?
Make sure you start your day in a positive way, just so you are feeling good enough to donate blood. Drink lots of water and make sure your diet is less in fat content and rich in iron. Remember that you need good levels of hemoglobin yourself before donating and eating iron-rich food will help increase your hemoglobin count. Wear a short-sleeved dress to make it more comfortable for you while donating.
This year’s theme has the objective of thanking all the donors for their humanitarian activities and encouraging youth to take part in blood donations and make them understand the importance of it. This not only helps people but helps build cohesion in society to take part in many selfless acts like this. Let us all be responsible adults and Donate blood to commemorate World Blood Donor Day 2022.
